Alberta L. Bland

Sept. 2, 1937 - May 8, 2010
Alberta Lee Bland was born September 2, 1937 to Bert Austin and Opal A (Pettit) Bland at home in Beaver City, Nebraska. She weighed 10 pounds that day; and as the years passed, she never grew over 5' 1" but she had a huge heart. Alberta had one older brother, Austin and one younger, Monty. They both treasured and teased her which contributed to her joyous personality. When Alberta was 12 years old she had open heart surgery, the first successful open heart surgery in a child in the state of Nebraska. That heart continued to beat strong until May 8, 2010 when she left this world for a better life.
Alberta graduated from the University of Nebraska with a degree in Medical Technology. She retired from Presbyterian Hospital and the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She loved cooking, gardening, wood working, singing with "Young at Heart" and her two dogs "Charlie" and "Sophie."
Young at Heart choir members remember her beautiful smile even in the face of serious and painful disease. In 2008, Heartsville Fair attendees were treated to Green Chili Stew made by Alberta and her dear friend, Luann Daniel.

Paul Atkinson

March 16, 1940 - March 20, 2010
Paul R. Atkinson peacefully left this life and was received into the presence of our Heavenly Father at 6:48 am, March 20, 2010. He was visited by all of his family the previous night as they stood around his bed and sang praises to his Lord. Paul led his family, as had been his custom, in a final prayer in a voice weakened in his final hours.

Paul was born on March 16, 1940, in West Virginia. He is survived by his loving wife, Connie (our Fearless Leader); children, Michael Atkinson and wife Jody, Daniel Atkinson and wife Joannie, and Christine Foss and husband Jeff, who were given to Paul when he married Connie in 1971 and he raised as his own; and 14 grandchildren, Jerrod, Amy, Rashawn, Brittney, Julian, Kaila, Aubrey, Cheyanne, Bryson, Taylor, Hailey, Vanessa, Daniel, and Joey, who were each able to tell him how much
they loved him the night before his death. He is also survived by brother, Donald Atkinson and wife Connie; sisters, Carol Gunter and Libby Myers and husband Ron. He worked for Arizona Sun Sales for many years before retiring and working closely with Connie and the Young at Heart Choir ministry.

Paul accompanied Connie on choir pre-tours, and the Young at Heart family will always remember the tour itineraries that Paul diligently made that were thoroughly researched and so amazingly accurate. He made sure that we were where we needed to be in a timely manner.

Until the last year or so, Paul was our #1 sound man, making sure that we all sounded good. He made sure we had the equipment we needed as well as any possibly needed equipment replacement.

Paul served the Young at Heart Choir with all the love he could give, and he truly believed you were gifts from God.  We will miss you!

Marv G. Marwin Austin

February 2, 1916 - February 19, 2020
George Marwin Austin, born February 2, 1916, went to be with the Lord on Friday, February 19, 2010. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Arlette Austin; children Marilyn Tetzlaff and husband Hal of Maplewood, MN, Harriet Grim and husband Don of Buna, TX, Lorrayne Austin of Albuquerque, Diane Viau and husband Dave of Clear Lake, WI, and Glenda Austin of Albuquerque; grandchildren Randy and wife Beth, Kristin and husband Lloyd, Dan and wife Gretchen, Debbie and husband Robbie, Chris and wife Stacy, Kim, Don and Elise; and 13 great-grandchildren. Mr. Austin worked at Sandia Labs for 31 years.
He volunteered for Noon Day Ministries for 20 years.  Mr. Austin was a member of Hoffmantown Church for 30 years.  He was a charter member of the Young at Heart Choir.  Marv entertained audiences for years by pestering Choir Director, Connie Atkinson, during concerts to sing a solo. When she finally relented and asked him to sing, he sang, “When I was just a little boy, I asked my mother, what would I be. Will I be rich, will I be handsome? Here’s what she said to me.” Then choir would shout, “No.” It was always funny, no matter how many times we saw him do it.  Marv was always one of the first ones to greet prospective members and was proud of how many years he had been a part of Young at Heart. Marv will be missed

Helen Baxter

October 6, 1923 - December 19, 2009
Helen Louise Baxter was born in Peck, Kansas, October 6, 1923. She grew up in Wichita, Kansas, where she attended school and graduated from Wichita East High School in 1941. Her parents encouraged her creativeness early on by enrolling her in art classes. This resulted in work as a fashion illustrator, commercial illustrator for Coleman Company, and a window decorator and copywriter for a large department store in Kansas City.

She married Kenneth B. Culkin during World War II and became a military wife. The couple had three children: Sharon, Michael, and Mark Culkin. While married to Kenneth, the family lived in many different states and also traveled to Heidelberg, Germany in the late 1940’s and Berlin, Germany in 1953. While in Heidelberg, Helen was a civilian employee for the Counter Intelligence Corps. Her jobs consisted of compiling biweekly intelligence reports for the President and later doing security screening as people were repatriated out of the POW camps.
She was badly burned in an electrical accident while in Germany, losing two fingers on her left hand as a result, and was flown back to alley Forge Army Hospital in Pennsylvania, where she spent a year recovering from the burns.

In the 1960’s she married Otis D. Baxter Sr. of Wichita, and they opened an antiques and furniture restoration business called “Grandma’s Attic.” They traveled back east purchasing antiques for resale. They were married for 35 years. In the 1990’s Helen and Otis purchased a vacation mobile home in Angel Fire, NM, that became a gathering place for many of the family with trout-fishing trips and plenty of adventures, which supplied the basis for many of Helen’s future stories.

Following the death of her husband in 2000, she moved to Albuquerque to be close to her daughter. She involved herself in art activities at Los Volcanes Senior Center, became a member of the Young at Heart Choir, the Highland Senior Center Creative Writers Group, and the Southwest Writers. Prior to her death on December 19, 2009, she was in the process of completing a book entitled, “Bananas on Thursday,” a memoir of her life with Otis, which will be finalized and published by her children. She is survived by son, Mark Culkin, Rio Rancho; daughter Sharon Culkin White and husband Ken, Albuquerque; stepsons, Otis Dean Baxter of Texas, Kenton Baxter of Oklahoma; and stepdaughter, Beverly Baxter Haussermann and husband Andy, Wichita, Kansas. She was loved by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Helen was always a lady, beautifully dressed, complete with high heel shoes. We will always remember her leading the ‘Temperance Marches’ at the Young at Heart Country Fair (photo in Fair costume).   You will be missed.

Marian Jo Davis

October 22. 1930 - June 7, 2009
Marian was a woman committed to God and her family. She lived out her commitment by serving children in both her career, 28 years of teaching in APS, and 58 years of teaching children in her church. Marian has been a teacher of teachers for the past 20 years.

Traveling was one of her greatest joys; she traveled to all 50 states and many other countries. Even just days before she passed, she was actively serving and involved in the lives of her family. The gift of service was continually being expressed by Marian to her family and the community. Marian was an active member of Del Norte Baptist Church.
She is survived by her daughters, Lillian Ann Moon and husband, Danny, of Albuquerque and Cindy Chasteen and husband, Chris, of Elverta, CA; son, Larry Joe Davis and wife, Carrie, of Irving, TX; grandchildren, Karey Johnson and husband, Wil, Kristy Peck and husband, Wade, John Davis, Matthew Davis and wife, Casey, Cammi Moseley and husband, Justin, and Scott Chasteen and wife, Nicole; great-grandchildren, Isiah Howell, Noah Howell, Gabriellah Howell, Whitney Peck, Audrey Peck and Mason Davis; sister, Jane Wright of Springfield, MO; and brother, David Cordell of Littletown, CO. Marian was preceded in death by her husband, Ray H. Davis.

She was an active member of the area wide senior adult choir "Young At Heart", where she was choir chaplain. Young at Heart members fondly recall her exhortation to them during a choir tour to not let anything or anyone “steal your joy.”

Royce Elton Anderson

September 17, 1926 – January 2, 2009
Royce, lovingly called “Rusty,” was born September 17, 1926, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Rudolph and Mabel Anderson. He graduated from Gering, Nebraska High School in 1943 and attended Wheaton College, Wheaton, Illinois. He served in the Army Air Corp. Reserves during WWII. He married Mary N. Park in 1948 in Roswell, NM, before returning to the University of Colorado. He graduated from the University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado, in 1952.

Upon graduation, he moved to Montana as a geologist for Cities Service Oil Co., later moving to Oklahoma, New Mexico, Louisiana, and Texas before he took early retirement from Cities and went to work for Grown Central Oil Co. He worked another six years before retiring to Albuquerque in 1989, working in Exploration and Offshore Gulf of Mexico; he was an active member of Geological Society.
After returning to New Mexico, he lived in Placitas, NM. He was an active volunteer docent for the Rio Grande Zoo for 17 years. He also served as an active member of the Rancho de Placitas water board for two terms. He attended Hoffmantown Baptist Church. He loved his Lord, family, geology, travel, choir, and all the things he was involved in. He leaves behind his wife, Mary, of 60 years; son, Rod E. Anderson and children Ryan and Kati, daughter; Lynn McClain, husband Ron and son Forrest.

He was a charter member and the beloved President of the Young at Heart Gospel Choir for over 19 years. As YAH President, he provided stable leadership for Young at Heart for many years.   He always had the role of ‘captain’ of Bus #2 for choir tours, and who could forget the time on a Branson Tour when he was selected to play Dolly Parton on stage?

Alice J. Moser

June 10, 1929 – March 23, 2008
Alice J. Moser, 78, went home to be with her Lord during a beautiful Easter sunrise, Sunday, March 23, 2008. She was at home with many family members present. Alice is survived by her husband of 59 years, Robert Moser; children, Mary Perkins and husband, Howard, of Tijeras, NM, Ruth Bidewell and husband, David, of Rio Rancho, NM, Karl Moser and wife, Jan, of Albuquerque, NM, Amy Lassiter and husband, Shane, of Abilene, TX, and Peggy Sanchez and husband, Lou, of Albuquerque; 12 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; niece, Laura Galbraith, of Albuquerque; and numerous other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her sons, Carey Moser and Nathan Moser; and her parents, William and Alice Christen.
Alice was born on June 10, 1929, in Pueblo, Colorado. After her marriage to Bob Moser on July 7, 1948, they moved to Albuquerque in 1951 where they lovingly raised seven children. She and Bob operated Moser Studio from 1976 to 1984, where they made many friends. Alice then went to work for French Mortuary where she retired. Alice was a long-time member of Hoffmantown Church. She was very devoted to her husband, children, grandchildren, and many friends and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Alice was a long-time member of the Young at Heart choir where she could always be counted on to work in her support capacity.   She cared deeply for others, especially her family and was very involved in all their activities. She is shown here during a YAH trip to Colorado Springs with her husband Bob. Even in the face of terminal illness, she was always concerned about the folks around her.

Laura Lee Hall

December 17, 1925 – April 20, 2008
Known affectionately as "Laura Lee," she was born December 17, 1925, in Altus, OK, to Henry and Fannie Starkey. She attended Oklahoma Baptist University at Shawnee, OK, prior to her first marriage to Harold Miller, a Navy pilot, during WWII. After being released from the service, they moved to his home in Missouri. Soon after, he became ill, and she took a teaching position in a one room school known as "Pinhook." This was the beginning of a long teaching career.
After five years of marriage, Harold passed away from leukemia. She then married Russell Lindley and became mother to his two daughters, Carol and Sue. In 1956, the family moved to Albuquerque and settled in the Alameda community. Upon the death of her second husband in 1960, she returned to college finishing her BA degree at St. Joseph's College and her MA degree at UNM. She taught in the APS system for twenty-five years, where she was a dedicated teacher and a hard taskmaster. Laura is well remembered by many of her former students and by many of their children who she also taught. She retired from her position after a number of years at Alameda Elementary School but remained active in the NBA. Laura subsequently married two more times, first to Vernon Hall who passed away in 1990 and then to Fred Peckinpaugh who passed away in 2002.

Laura is survived by two daughters, Carol Beale of Littleton, NC and Sue Burow of Denten, TX; two stepsons, Dennis Peckinpaugh of Albuquerque and Tom Peckinpaugh of Benson, AZ; two grandchildren, Patrick Blankenship of Atlanta, GA and Jennifer McCall of Denton, TX; three great-grandchildren; and a host of friends.   She was an active member of the Hoffmantown Baptist Church.

Laura was active with the Young at Heart Senior Gospel Choir for eighteen years and served as vice president (“in charge of vice”) and a member of the official board for several years. She traveled with the choir extensively sharing her lovely alto solos and poignant (sometimes humorous) testimony of God’s faithfulness in her life’s journey of becoming a widow four times, ending with a solo in a YAH choir rendition of “Beulah Land.”

We will always remember her humorous, but patriotic, part in “Flag Waving American.” With an extended family of over one hundred twenty choir members, she has been a most beloved and revered presence and will be missed.
